- Rationale
- Note the same description is used for both F4: DP HHIP+ and F4: TNN+COCH+ due to uncertainty We named dermal papilla (F4: DP HHIP+) based on expression of reported dermal papilla markers (WNT5A, HHIP, RSPO3).(Rendl, Polak, and Fuchs 2008) However, we note that previous studies (e.g. 10.1101/2023.10.29.563503) have named the F4: TNN+COCH+ as dermal papilla with expression of CRABP1/COCH/RSPO4.We observed that the F4: DP HHIP+ population expressed CRABP1/COCH/RSPO4, at a lower level, but additionally expressed reported dermal papilla markers such as BMP7, RSPO3, and HHIP.(Hagner et al. 2020; Rendl, Polak, and Fuchs 2008) One possibility is that it represent dermal papilla in different states (e.g. anagen vs catagen). For example, LEF1 is only high in F4: DP_HHIP+. The F4: TNN+COCH+ population expressed relatively high universal fibroblast markers (CD34, PI16) and could thus represent a precursor population. Additionally, the F4: TNN+COCH+ population expressed genes reported for tendon-forming fibroblasts (MKX, TNMD).(Huang, Lu, and Schweitzer 2015)
