- Rationale
- The F1: Superficial population was characterised by expression of genes encoding collagens found in the superficial dermis (COL13A1, COL18A1, COL23A1)(Philippeos et al. 2018; Solé-Boldo et al. 2020) and WNT inhibitors (APCDD1, WIF1, and NKD2). Expression of WNT signalling components is also characteristic of superficial intestinal fibroblasts.
The location of these fibroblasts was adjacent to epidermis. . In agreement with this location, current evidence points towards a WNT-mediated, synergistic interplay between superficial fibroblasts and basal keratinocytes that is essential for the maintenance of fibroblast cellular identity in skin.(Knoedler et al. 2023; Philippeos et al. 2018; Rognoni et al. 2016)
A fibroblast population expressing Wnt signalling inhibitors (Sfrp2, Axin2, Wif1) and Wnt5a (similar to F1: Superficial regenerative fibroblasts) has also been linked to an anti-fibrotic phenotype in murine heart tissue.(Farbehi et al. 2019)
