Marker Gene Evidence
Gene markers used by researcher to assign this cell annotation.- SCGB1A1, MUC5B
Rationale
- Goblet cells are luminal cells of the epithelium secreting mucus. Goblet cells express MUC5AC and MUC5B as secreted mucins.
Subsegmental goblet cells express lower MUC5AC and higher SCGB1A1 compared to bronchial goblet cells. They express similar levels of MUC5B.
They can also be distinguished from nasal goblet cells by the absence of expression of nasal developmental origin genes such as SIX3, PAX7, OTX2.
