Colonocytes are the absorptive epithelial cells of the large intestine. Similar to enterocytes, these are subdivided into early and late stage, and when neither of these can be determined, this broader description is used. Hypoxia-related markers are used to differentiate colonocytes from other absorptive epithelial cells due to the less regulated tissue microenvironment.
